We have included some brief information about some of our more commonly used treatment approaches below.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy gets its name from one of its core messages: accept what is out of your personal control, and commit to action that improves and enriches your life.
The aim of ACT is to maximise the potential for a rich, full, satisfying and meaningful life.
ACT does this by firstly teaching you psychological skills to deal with your painful thoughts and feelings in such a way that they have much less impact and influence over you. Secondly, it assists you to clarify what is truly important and meaningful to you – your values – then use your personal values to guide, inspire and motivate you to change your life for the better.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a skills-based, internationally recommended psychological treatment. CBT targets the cognitions (the things you think) and behaviours (the things you do) that contribute to conditions like anxiety and depression. CBT focuses on the present and tends to suit people interested in learning practical skills for boosting their mental health.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a modified version of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) that is designed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD). It can also be used to treat other conditions, like suicidal behaviour, self-harm, substance use, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and eating disorders.
DBT teaches behavioural skills based on the notions of both ‘acceptance’ and ‘change’. The therapist accepts you just as you are, but acknowledges the need for change in order for you to recover, move forward and reach your personal goals.
The therapist works with you to help you move away from a chaotic life and towards a life that you find personally meaningful and fulfilling.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and Intensive EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences that relate to various conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar, PTSD, Complex PTSD and personality disorders.
EMDR therapy focuses directly on processing memories that have had lasting impacts, and intends to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating the problematic symptoms. EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions.
EMDR therapy is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. These can be both “big T Traumas” and “little t” traumas. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies. It is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.
Radically Open Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (RODBT)
Radically Open Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (RO DBT) is an evidence based structured treatment targeting a range of disorders characterized by excessive self-control, often referred to as overcontrol (OC). Self-control is usually seen as a good thing, however too much self-control can cause difficulties. Excessive self-control is associated with social isolation and poor interpersonal relations such as emotional loneliness – not necessarily lacking contact with others - but lack of social connectedness with others. RO-DBT treatment strategies aim to build flexible responses to any given situation, authentic emotional expressions which assist in building positive interpersonal relationships, self-reflection skills and the ability to manage unexpected or challenging feedback.
Gottman Method Couples Therapy
Gottman Method Couples Therapy is based on 40 years of research and focuses on teaching couples how to recognize the unhelpful behaviours that are causing relationship distress as well as teaching couples how to implement empirically researched and tested skills to address these weaknesses.
Couples complete comprehensive questionnaires and then receive detailed feedback on their relationship.
