What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that is helpful for treating psychological conditions and their physical symptoms which are the result of difficult life experiences. It was developed by Francine Shapiro in the 1980s.

What is Intensive EMDR?
(I-EMDR)
Intensive EMDR (I-EMDR) is a consolidated and accelerated model of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Instead of pacing treatment sessions out over several weeks or months, I-EMDR involves longer duration sessions and more frequent sessions within a shorter timeframe. If you have been in therapy for a significant amount of time and feeling like things might have stalled or you’re not quite getting the progress you’ve been hoping for then I-EMDR is a good clinical consideration.
Benefits of I-EMDR:
Improved Progress:
Through I-EMDR we expect clients to experience quicker symptom reduction and vastly expediated healthy reprocessing of trauma memories. Intensive EMDR allows for deeper, more focused work on traumatic memories or psychological difficulties due to the momentum and condensed time frame.
Processing Is Deepened:
The expanded session duration allows individuals to dive into their processing in greater detail. Without the pressure of a standard 60-minute session, individuals allow themselves the time and space needed to process on a deeper level. During the usual standard 60-minute EMDR session, you and your Psychologist will likely spend the first 5 - 10 minutes checking in and setting up for reprocessing. You’ll also ideally leave 5-10 minutes at the end of the session to soothe the nervous system and discuss some of the takeaways from reprocessing. This ultimately leaves only a little more than 30 minutes of time to reprocess!
Reduced Disruption:
Without the distractions of everyday life to pull attention away from the therapy goals (which is more likely to happen if therapy is spread out over a long period of time with weekly sessions) we can maintain focus on the goals more easily.
Better Flexibility:
Our convenient after-work hours programs reduce the stress of trying to squeeze sessions into already busy work/family routines. Many individuals state that booking weekly or fortnightly sessions is too challenging due to home, work and family commitments. I-EMDR can be booked ahead and worked around school holidays, babysitting requirements, after work or even annual leave.
Treatment When I Need It:
At MMPP, all our psychologists are usually booked out for many months in advance, so I-EMDR also allows you to lock in I-EMDR therapy time much sooner than standard EMDR appointments due to I-EMDR’s specialised after-hours convenience.
Therapeutic Relationship:
I-EMDR allows for brief, short term focused therapy with a trained EMDR therapist. This means that if you currently have a great working relationship with your current Psychologist, after your I-EMDR program concludes, you can return to your individual Psychologist for ongoing care. I-EMDR is especially helpful in these cases whereby you and/or your Psychologist may sense a plateau in your therapy or suspect some base of trauma, but they aren’t EMDR trained. You can have the best of worlds!
When is I-EMDR Not Clinically Appropriate?
The intensive format of I-EMDR can be physically and emotionally draining for an individual. Your I-EMDR Psychologist will assess your individual suitability however some factors that may preclude your suitability in certain situations may be:
Being significantly medically ill (fatigue and exhaustion in particular)
Currently in significant crisis or experiencing self-harm and/or acute suicidal thoughts
Significant dissociative symptoms
I-EMDR should only be conducted by therapists who are specifically trained in EMDR to ensure it is done safely and effectively. At MMPP, your I-EMDR Psychologist Carlie Kowald is fully EMDR trained, has used EMDR for over a decade and has completed the Advanced EMDR training.
Please note that often your psychological difficulties are a result of a much broader issue or event. During the assessment phase, your I-EMDR Psychologist will conduct a case formulation to review which memories and thoughts contribute to the larger issue at hand. If there is a lot of complexity, we may not be able to treat and resolve all parts within one or two weeks of treatment, but we will focus on areas of mutually agreed importance that we will work to process together.
In summary, I-EMDR programs are an innovative, convenient and efficient extension and advancement of the traditional EMDR treatment sessions. Please reach out to our friendly admin team for more information and see below for flexible payment options and pricing information.
